I celebrated the festive season back at home. My hometown
Kirinyaga. This was a good decision to make because I had to choose between
Nakuru and Kirinyaga. Nakuru is where my parents live while Kirinyaga is where
my grandparents live. This was my first Christmas away from home. However, it
was worthwhile. I must agree that there must have been a supernatural kind
force that intervened through the entire vacation. It results were extremely
amusing.
My aunt and uncle who live with my grandmother are practice
aptly farming. They grow both cash crops and food crops. They also keep animals
and birds. They are a rich couple in the
village as they own a small retail store where they sell everything to the
entire village. This makes the family popular. It was amazing learning the
skills of farming. I can take great pride in my newly acquired skills. Most
important is Strawberry farming. The benefit with harvesting is you harvest as
you eat. That will be a memorable experience full of good memories. I was a
part of a great farming process. We planted French Beans too.
We were all eager to know how many marks my cousin Maureen
scored. She was a candidate last year. The day was finally here. The delay in
getting the feedback just made us more eager. My uncle suggested that we should
all send the message again. Eventually we received the feedback. She was not
excited about it. She felt as if she had let her parents down.
“My daughter scored 330 marks she has extremely tried. Faith
your daughter was a 400 material student but scored 363,” defensive my aunt
told her friends.
“I am genuinely proud of her,”
revealed my aunt.
Hearing this consoled Maureen and she stopped crying. She
could not believe her parents were that proud of her. She thought they were
trying to make her feel better about herself but that was not the case.
“Today we will eat chicken. I have a reason to celebrate.” Said
her mother proudly.
That night we ate two chickens and ugali. It is our
traditional cuisine. Later, when the father arrived he bought her a full kilo
of goat meat. These were her best meals. After the feast we were all excited
about Maureen’s success. But her hidden sorrow was visible in her father’s
sight and he would not allow his daughter to decord their joy with the wrong
aspect. He carefully spoke to her to create a moment of clarity in her life
about success.
“Success is a moving target that must be tracked and
continually pursued. Achieving success in one area does not substitute the
failure in another. Success is not highly scored marks. It is the best of your
ability that makes you feel self fulfillment.” Said the dad warmly in a
convincing way.
These words assured Maureen that really she had conquered
the challenge at her best. She felt the joy she had shared with us was genuine.
